Contemporary Oak frame design in Alexton

This lovely contemporary pair of oak frame extensions have just been completed in the rural Welland Valley village of Alexton. The standing seamed zinc fascia and roof detail including the simplistic roof atriums lead the approach to the design of these glazed oak extensions. The brief was again natural light, natural materials but with a contemporary/modern edge. The flat roof design was essential for these extensions in both the aesthetic and practical sense and with the new membrane that is now used throughout the flat roofed industry is for all intents and purposes a swimming pool liner that has welded seams and with a 10 year warranty belies all the old worries with a flat roof. The large atrium lights dealt with the need for the loss of light where the new building abutted the existing, using light coloured travertine floor also helped bounce the light into the adjacent rooms. Heating as usual was an underfloor heating system joined to the existing boiler and plumbing.  With modern advances these systems are very easy to install, are very efficient and have very low maintenance. Lighting was our standard spec of internal spots, central pendants and exterior lighting , all of which […]

Alexton Contemporary Oak frame extensions

Modern Oak Framed Extensions (Oak Framed Outbuilding & Conservatories) We are at the landscaping stages of this beautiful oak frame project in the rural village of Alexton, Rutland. The design brief was to make use of natural light and natural materials and build in a contemporary manner.   We achieved this by using central atrium lights set into a standing seam zinc flat roof.   By incorporating floor to ceiling glazing we maximised the natural light and also the beautiful views of the surrounding fields. We will be adding this project into our case studies in the next few weeks.

Medbourne River Oak frame

This lovely air dried oak framed extension in the ancient village of Medbourne has recently been completed by our team at Natural Structures. This new space is abutting a 500 year old cottage that is literally yards from the river which runs through this little rural village. The new space incorporates a new kitchen, day room, utility & WC. Our brief for the team was to design a building that not only incorporated the above functions but also took advantage of the natural light that the location of the cottage offered. The materials that were chosen to run along the build design were kept to an absolute minimum to create a simplistic structure. Oak was the natural choice to sit sympathetically with the natural stone of the cottage, where possible we left these elements exposed to help give the new structure some genuine detail. Lighting, as always plays a large role in creating atmosphere within the space and as standard all the lighting we fit is adjustable in output through dimmer switches. This again is the same for the exterior lighting as this is not only for the aesthetics of the building but also an important factor in those dark days of […]

Simple Welland Valley design

With the Welland river running through the gardens of this beautiful residence, the new stone and oak extensions make the most of the river view.  The existing house is several hundred years old and now with these cleverly designed extensions has doubled its size. The choice to use local stone and original Collyweston roof slates makes the new space feel as if it was built along with the original house. After a few months of exposure and de-colouring it will look as one dwelling all built decades ago. With new kitchens, utility, drawing room and dining/snug area, the traditional dwelling has been brought into the 21st century. The atrium roof light was designed for maximum natural light into the dining/snug area and also to throw light into the existing room therefore negating the potential loss of light. The six leaf bi-fold doors were designed for the light benefit and also to open the area up entirely onto the new terraced area. Design details such as areas left unplastered to show off the unique age-old stonework and sympathetic design of skirting and architrave all help to lend this space an air of originality. The oak and stone work seamlessly together as both are natural, warm and textured […]
